‘Tower: Instant Structure’ is a monolithic yet ephemeral tower of falling water consisting of 30,000 litres cycled every minute.
The simulated structure of Tower is transient, its presence a temporary spectre. The walls appear and disappear instantaneously as the water is stopped and started, in stark contrast to the solid and static surrounding architecture of the Zeche
Zollverein coal mine.
Bringing this vast volume of water under control echos the ‘eternal problem’ of the area, where six million cubic metres of water must be pumped from the abandoned mines every year in order to warrant the structural integrity of the entire
region.
