OPTICAL FLOW  |  JASON BRUGES STUDIO

2021 | Nottingham public realm

Lead design / Project lead

Optical Flow invites reflection on our interaction with, and impact on, our natural environments. The experimental media artwork uses live wind speed data to generate a real-time simulation of the rippling surface of the nearby river. Through digital animation it emulates the way sunlight bounces off this surface to create glittering patterns known as ‘solar glint’. Standing in front of the installation, passers-by can interact with the digital water. The shadows they cast onto the artwork generate splashes and radiate waves which in turn create solar glint.

The artwork hopes to inspire contemplation on our interconnectedness with nature and the inevitable impact of our actions.
